Whats your salary?

Does this sound offensive. May be it does.Asking other persons salary directly is little offensive and the other person dosent know how to politely decline giving answer.Though there are people who outright blast asking why they need their salary details.
Let me give an intro why this idea came to me. I just got into a bus from office and saw an indian seating beside me.All my patriotism clicked inside me and I smiled her and said a simple Hi. Now that dint sound that bad. She caught the bus in the same stop and must be living near my house so though could make some friends. She started a conversation and after 2 mins we were chatting along. She told me where she works, where her husband works ,where they stay ,when she got married ,how she got into this job after a long time searching for one and stuff.I was patiently listening to her.
Then started asking me questions..
“Where do you work”
“I work in xxx”
“Whats your salary?” Now it was time for me to get shocked. She was a sweet girl and we had pleasant conversation. But how do I say no to her in a polite way.
“I do get okay”. Thats the best I could give. Then the conversation moved on and we talked about other stuff and the topic of job market came and she asked me again the same question. When I dint answer she asked me if I get more than xx amount. I dint know what to answer so I told her I have good years of exp .She being a fresher might have speculated or understood whatever dint ask the question again.
There is a saying that you should never ask a womens age and mens wage. Now the generation has changed “dont ask anyone their age or wage “.
I dont know if any of you has faced the same scenarios but I still dont give a confident answer( I mean a no) when someone asks my salary.May be I should learn to say no.
